The Philippines on Saturday confirmed 34 new cases of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), raising to 98 the total number of patients afflicted with the illness.

In a statement, the DOH said details of the new cases "are currently being validated by our teams and will be provided to the public as soon as the information is available and verified by the Department."

It said additional cases are being verified.

The fresh information came after the health department confirmed three more deaths from the virus Saturday, bringing the total death toll to 8.

The Philippines is currently under a state of public health emergency, with the response alert at Code Red, Sub-level 2 following "sustained community transmission."

Metro Manila is set to go under community quarantine from Sunday, March 15, to Tuesday, April 14, as government hoped to contain the outbreak.

More details to follow.
