Justin Brownlee scored 32 points, including a key basket late in the game, as Barangay Ginebra thwarted NorthPort's comeback en route to 73-70 win in the 2019 PBA Commissioner's Cup at Mall of Asia Arena on Saturday.

The game was tied at 70-all when Brownlee connected from long distance with 1:23 to go, a shot that helped to deal the Batang Pier their first loss in 4 games.

“I feel like it was a loss than a win,” said coach Tim Cone, whose players struggled late in the game before Brownlee connected on the go-ahead corner triple.

“But our defense got us in the game, we basically survived with our defense . . . We struggled offensively.”

Indeed it was their defense that prevented the Batang Pier from coming up with a basket after Brownlee’s booming trey. The Gin Kings held on in the dying seconds and forced NorthPort to miss 3 attempts that could have sent the game into overtime.

Brownlee, Greg Slaughter and Scottie Thompson carried most of the scoring duties for Ginebra on Saturday night. Slaughter had 16 points, while Thompson finished with 11.

Mo Tautuaa tallied 15 points to lead Batang Pier, who lost for the first time in 4 games.

The scores:

Ginebra 73 - Brownlee 32, Slaughter 16, Thompson 11, Mercado 6, Aguilar 3, Ferrer 3, Mariano 2, Devance 0, Tenorio 0, Teodoro 0.

NorthPort 70 - Tautuaa 15, Anthony 14, Grey 9, Lanete 8, Ibeh 8, Pringle 7, Bolick 5, Elorde 4, Flores 0, Gabayni 0.

Quarterscores: 13-14, 38-31, 55-54, 73-70.
