BARANGAY Ginebra will be getting a taste of international basketball as the Kings will once again be facing Korean ballclub LG Sakers on Sept. 17 at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.
Dubbed as the Asian Basketball Showdown 2, the match serves as a tune-up for the two clubs for their respective mother leagues while celebrating the 70 years of friendship between the Philippines and Korea.
The two teams first faced off in 2014, with the Sakers beating the Kings, 81-76.
The Gin Kings are gearing up for the Governors’ Cup with Justin Brownlee looking to lead his team after a semifinal defeat against TNT in the recent Commissioner’s Cup.
Ginebra could also be pitted against a familiar face as the Sakers have recently signed Vernon Macklin as their import for the 2019-2020 season.
Macklin, who played last year with Magnolia and Kawasaki Brave Thunders in Japan, was the import of the Kings in the 2013 Commissioner’s Cup. The Kings reached the finals that conference, bowing to Alaska in a sweep of the best-of-five series.
A team based in Changwon, the Sakers are one of the premier teams in Korea. They lost in the Korean Basketball League (KBL) semifinals to the Incheon Electroland Elephants.
The exhibition game is also in partnership with the PBA and the KBL.
