University of Santo Tomas (UST) shoots for a crucial win against Adamson University as Ateneo de Manila University tries to move closer for a sweep of Season 82 University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) men’s basketball tournament Saturday at the Yñares Center in Antipolo City.
The Growling Tigers hope to secure at least a playoff for a Final Four slot with a victory over the eliminated Soaring Falcons in their 4 p.m. encounter.
The league-leading and unbeaten Blue Eagles, holding a 12-0 win-loss mark, seek their 13th win in a row against the also-ran National University (NU) in their 2 p.m. encounter.
But focus will be on UST, which is currently sharing the third spot with Far Eastern University (FEU) at 7-6 and a loss could lead to elimination if the Tamaraws and La Salle (6-6) reach eight wins.
The Growling Tigers failed to secure a semifinal seat after dropping a 79-80 heartbreaker to the Green Archers in their previous game.
They will be facing a dangerous Adamson squad, which beat them in the first round, 78-71, and will play without any pressure as the Soaring Falcons are already out of contention with a 4-8 slate.
“This is our last game in the elimination so I just urge the kids to give their best against the Adamson,” UST head coach Aldin Ayo said.
“As for me, I don’t impose any pressure on the guys. I just ask them to execute our game plan and the system so we can get better results. The standing is so close right now and our fate will not only depend on our games but as well as the other team’s,” he added.
Soulemane Chabi Yo, Rhenz Abando, Mark Nonoy and CJ Cansino will lead the charge of UST against the Soaring Falcons, who will be missing the Final Four round for first time under coach Franz Pumaren.
Adamson was eliminated by FEU, 60-63, last Wednesday and Pumaren admitted the team’s lack of experience was the main reason why they failed to make the semis this season.
“Coming into this season, half of my team are rookies. One thing we learned this year is there’s really no substitute for experience,” Pumaren said.
Meanwhile, Ateneo is heavily favored to win against the 2-10 NU five and moves one win away from going straight to the best-of-three championship series.
The Blue Eagles are coming off an 84-50 demolition of University of the East to stretch their winning streak to 22 games dating back last season.
“For any team in this position things like undefeated seasons, sweeps, they happen because you take it one step at at time not because you make some grand statement about how good you are in front of a microphone,” Ateneo head coach Tab Baldwin said.
The Bulldogs will just try to end their campaign on a high note by sweeping their last two assignments.
“What I’ve always been saying to the boys is they do not disrespect the game,” NU head coach Jamike Jarin said. “Every game is an official game for us. We have to play the right way every time.”
The Bulldogs are coming off a tough 77-80 loss to University of the Philippines for their fifth straight loss.
