The Philippine women's national volleyball team will get a taste of competitive action when it participates in the Philippine Superliga (PSL) Super Cup, starting on Tuesday at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The national team, which will be returning from a 12-day training camp in Tokyo on Friday, will clash with three other teams in a mini-tournament that seeks to test their readiness for the 30th Southeast Asian Games.

Aside from the league's two selection squads in Team Sparkle and Team Shine, the women's team of Tsukuba University will also challenge the Philippine team.

Tsukuba is the reigning champion of the All-Japan Intercollegiate Volleyball Championship and is tipped to come up with a solid performance in the tournament.

Skipper Aby Maraño of F2 Logistics will be at the forefront of the national team’s attack as well as teammates Kalei Mau, Dawn Macandili and Majoy Baron, Mika Reyes, Frances Molina and Rhea Dimaculangan of Petron, Mylene Paat and Jovelyn Gonzaga of Cignal, Kat Arado of Generika-Ayala and Eya Laure of Foton.

Former national team members Aiza Maizo-Pontillas and Denden Lazaro of Petron and MJ Philips of Sta. Lucia will banner Team Shine together with Remy Palma and Buding Duremdes of Petron, Fiola Ceballos, Ria Meneses, Patty Orendain, Mean Mendrez and Bia General of Generika-Ayala; Amanda Villanueva, Eli Soyud and Rebecca Rivera of Sta. Lucia; and Des Clemente, Alex Cabanos and Fritz Gallenero of F2 Logistics with Carl Dimaculangan as head coach.

Meanwhile, Alohi Robins-Hardy of Cignal will spearhead the attack of Team Sparkle together with teammates Roselyn Doria, Ranya Musa and May Luna; EJ Laure, Jen Reyes, Mina Aganon and Elaine Kasilag of Foton; Gretchel Soltones, Jerilli Malabanan, Jasmine Nabor and Alyssa Eroa of PLDT Home Fibr; and Judith Abil, Caitlyn Viray, Dimdim Pacres and Nica Guliman of Marinerang Pilipina with Vilet Ponce-de Leon as head coach.

PH team gears up for SEA Games with PSL Super Cup

KALEI Mau and Alohi Robins-Hardy won’t play for the women’s national team in the second leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix, from Friday to Sunday, at the Sta. Rosa Multipurpose Sports Complex in Laguna.

National team head coach Shaq Delos Santos said that they won’t risk Mau in the second leg due to an achilles injury that she sustained during their Thailand build-up.

“Definitely, hindi muna siya maglalaro ngayong second leg kasi talagang kailangan niya magpagaling muna,” said Delos Santos on the outside spiker, who averaged 14.3 points per game in the first leg.

Besides Mau, her bestfriend Robins-Hardy, is ineligible for the second leg as she doesn’t have Philippine passport.

After the national team training camp and their bronze medal finish in the first leg held in Thailand, Mau already missed two matches of F2 Logistics in the Philippine Superliga Invitationals.

The Filipina-American spiker told the reporters on Saturday that she has skin allergy but it turned out that she is also nursing an achilles injury as revealed by F2 Logistics head coach Ramil De Jesus.

“After nung game nila sa Thailand, pagdating nila dito hindi na siya nakatraining, sumasakit yung achilles and then pinacheck up namin sabi ng doctor, rest muna for one week,” said De Jesus. “Then tsaka pa lang titignan kung may improvement or maless yung pain. Pag hindi, tuloy two to three weeks (rest).”

Besides losing Mau and Robins-Hardy, Alyssa Valdez and Jia Morado, who had teeth extraction, expressed on Sunday that they are doubtful to play in the second leg as the Creamline management has instructed them to play in their Premier Volleyball League game in IloIlo City in Saturday.

National team member Maddie Madayag is also unsure as Choco Mucho faces Valdez’s and Morado’s Creamline in Ilo-ilo City as well as Jovelyn Gonzaga, who also has a game for Pacifictown-Army facing Petro Gazz.

But Delos Santos said all these PVL players committed to play in the ASEAN Grand Prix and Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas Inc. is negotiating with their club teams.

“I think ok naman sila kahit na meron silang out of town paguusapan lang na merong best way na magagawa pero nagcommit naman sila,” he said.

If the PVL players won’t be available, the nationals will be down to nine women composed of team skipper Aby Marano, First leg’s Best Middle Blocker Majoy Baron, Mylene Paat, Roselyn Doria, Ces Molina, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Eya Laure, Dawn Macandili and Kath Arado.

As the tournament requires 14 players, Delos Santos bared that they will loan players from other clubs to play for the 2nd Leg but he didn’t disclose the names yet.

“Mabigat kasi siyempre ako as a coach kailangan meron akong laging magandang line-up kaya lang siyempre part kasi yan so doon na lang kami magfofocus sa solusyon,” said Delos Santos. “Most likely outside (at setter), yung kaposition ni Kalei (at Alohi).”

Delos Santos said that he and LVPI might announce the line-up for the Philippines leg of the ASEAN Grand Prix on Tuesday.

Blow for PH spikers as Mau, Robins-Hardy to miss ASEAN Grand Prix second leg

The Philippine women’s volleyball team goes up against Indonesia on Friday at the start of the first leg of the Southeast Asian Grand Prix at the Terminal 21 Mall in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Nationals hope to apply what they’ve learned from their 12-day training camp in Bangkok where they faced the Torray Arrows of the Japan V-League and the national team of Thailand, among other squads.

The training and the Grand Prix are crucial part of the PH team’s preparations for the 30th Southeast Asian Games in Manila scheduled late November as head coach Shaq Delos Santos claims they have only been playing together for a short time.

Open tryouts, however, were held last January and a training pool was formed last March, but injuries and training schedules with their club teams became a problem in having a complete attendance during their trainings.

“We need to make quick adjustments,” said Delos Santos. “But these are mostly veteran players. They can make do with what’s given. We will do our best under the circumstances.”

After Indonesia, the Nationals will battle Thailand on Saturday and Vietnam on Sunday.

A second leg will be held in Sta. Rosa, Laguna on Oct. 4 to 6.

The team is composed of Kalei Mau, Ces Molina, Eya Laure, Aiza Pontillas, Mylene Paat, Jovelyn Gonzaga, team captain Aby Marano, Majoy Baron, Maddie Madayag, Roselyn Doria, Dawn Macandili, Kath Arado, Jia Morado and Alohi Robins-Hardy.

Alyssa Valdez missed the tournament after hurting her right ankle during club training two days before leaving for the tournament.

Alyssa Valdez and Jaja Santiago continue to banner the Philippine women's volleyball training pool as the buildup for the 2019 Southeast Asian Games gets going.

The 22-strong national team pool, captained by Aby Maraño, also includes mainstays Majoy Baron, Jema Galanza, Denden Lazaro, Dawn Macandili, Ces Molina, Jia Morado, Mylene Paat, Aiza Maizo-Pontillas, Dindin Santiago, and Mika Reyes.

The twin towers Santiago sisters will return from their Japan V.League stint to reinforce the national team.

Kalei Mau, the 6-foot-2 Fil-Am who recently acquired dual citizenship, is also a step closer to debuting for the Philippine team along with 7 other new faces.

Also bidding to make the final cut that will compete in the regional meet that the country will host late November are Kath Arado, Tots Carlos, Celine Domingo, Eya Laure, Jerrili Malabanan, Gel Cayuna, MJ Phillips, and Alohi Robins-Hardy.

The national team will still be mentored by Shaq delos Santos, who has been in charge since the team's 2018 Asian Games campaign.

Five-time UAAP MVP and three-time champion Marck Espejo will also return from Japan to lead the men’s national team as his contract with Oita Miyoshi Weisse Adler ends in May 2019.

The men’s training pool is composed of recent UAAP champions from Ateneo and National University, which includes five-time best setter Ish Polvorosa, Season 80 Finals MVP Bryan Bagunas, Rex Intal and veteran Peter Torres.

The men’s national team will be mentored by Dante Alinsunurin of the NU Bulldogs.

The Larong Volleyball ng Pilipinas also formed a youth team, although no competition has been lined up for the Under-23 pool.

Leading the squad are UAAP stars Isa Molde of University of the Philippines and Far Eastern University rookie Lycha Ebon.

UAAP juniors stars Angel Canino, Alleiah Malaluan, and Faith Nisperos also made the cut.

University of Santo Tomas head coach Emilio “Kung Fu” Reyes will be guiding the development of the young squad. – Rappler.com
