Creamline dealt PetroGazz its first defeat in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference, beating the Angels 25-18, 21-25, 25-19, 26-24 at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan on Saturday.

With the victory, Creamline avenge its loss to PetroGazz in their first-round clash.

Creamline drops PetroGazz in 4 sets to hand Angels' first defeat


Defending champion Creamline welcomed the return of coach Tai Bundit with a 13-25, 25-19, 25-16, 25-23, victory over winless Motolite on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Cool Smashers came back from a set down to stop Motolite off its track for a 3-1 win-loss record at solo second spot behind unbeaten league-leading PetroGazz.

Thai import Kuttika Kaewpin scored 17 points - all from attacks - and added 12 digs and eight excellent receptions for Creamline, which struggled on its reception especially in the first set as it allowed Motolite to land 18 aces. Alyssa Valdez had 13 markers off eight spikes and five aces with 14 digs while Venezuelan reinforcement Ale Blanco posted nine points for the Cool Smashers.

Creamline, who saw the return of Bundit after replacing fired Chinese mentor Huanning Li, turned the tables around in the second set with confidence-boosting 9-0 closing run after a dismal first frame.

"I think we knew what we’re doing wrong and our mistakes in the first set which was the reception. Jia [Morado] couldn’t set sa mga spikers so 'yun talaga," said Valdez. "We really focused on how we can do better in receiving so it was better naman in second to fourth sets."

Creamline crawled back from a 16-19 hole in the second frame with nine straight points highlighted by Michele Gumabao's three points - her only production in the match - in the squad's last four markers in the set.

"It was just a slow start for us," said playmaker Morado, who dished out 22 excellent sets that helped Creamline unleash 42 attack points.

The Cool Smashers, who exploited Motolite’s error-filled game, got a scare in the fourth set when Motolite behind import Channon Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago saved two match points, 23-24.

But Motolite committed its last and most painful of its 35 errors when setter Fhen Emnas overcooked her service.

Motolite dropped its fourth straight game in as many outings in the first of its back-to-back weekend schedule.

Thompson scored 23 points off 18 attacks, four aces and a kill block while compatriot Krystle Esdelle fired 11 markers in a lost cause for Motolite, which is yet to see top local hitter Myla Pablo in action.

Cool Smashers win third straight in Bundit’s return


PacificTown Army returned in the win column after giving newcomer Motolite a rude welcome, 25-21, 25-21, 23-25, 25-21, on Saturday in the Premier Volleyball League Season 3 Reinforced Conference at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Troopers weathered Motolite’s late fourth set rally to seal their second victory in three games.

Royse Tubino finished with 18 points off 16 attacks, an ace and a kill block with 15 digs for an all-around game for PacificTown Army. Ukrainian import Lena Lymareva-Flink led the Lady Troopers with 25 points built on 22 attacks and three aces with 12 excellent receptioons while American reinforcement Jenelle Jordan posted nine markers.

“Magandang turning point tong panalo namin so maganda start nag2-1 agad kami,” said Pacifictown Army coach Kungfu Reyes. “Natuto kami nung Game 2 namin against kasi we have more errors sa creamline. Sa dami ng tapon ngayon nag siguro kami sa service namin.”

PacificTown Army pushed at match point, 24-17, but Motolite charged back, saving four match points before Lymareva-Flink finished off their opponents with a hit.

The Lady Troopers chipped off Motolite's 21-16 lead in the third frame to 23-22 after a mounting a 6-2 counterattack. Tubino committed a service error on the next play but Lymareva-Flink saved a set point off a crosscourt kill before Bosnian import Edina Selimovic blocked Jordan as Motolite prevented a shutout.

Motolite, which sat out top hitter Myla Pablo due to a strained back muscle, will play league-leading PetroGazz on Sunday.

Channon Thompson of Trinidad and Tobago posted 22 points off 18 spikes, two aces and two kill blocks with 10 digs for Motolite, which gave away 37 points off their miscues.

Selimovic had 15 markers while Eli Soyud added 10 for Motolite.

Lady Troopers spoil Motolite's debut

Volleyball fans can expect an all-out battle right away with newcomer PacificTown-Army Lady Troopers, a veteran squad bannered by star utility spiker Jovelyn Gonzaga, tries to make a statement against the young but talented BaliPure Purest Water Defenders led by NCAA standout Katrina Racelis in the first match.

Meanwhile, Alyssa Valdez’s powerhouse squad Creamline Cool Smashers, the 2018 Reinforced Conference champion, opens their title retention bid at 4 pm against Stephanie Mercado’s PetroGazz Angels, which will parade added weapons in Jeanette Panaga and Cai Nepomuceno-Baloaloa.

Apart from PacificTown-Army, another team debuting this season in the PVL is Motolite headlined by former PVL MVP Myla Pablo and former UP Lady Maroons Isa Molde and Tots Carlos. BanKo Perlas Spikers, meanwhile, will fight for another crack at the title on its third year behind Nicole Tiamzon and Dzi Gervacio.

Kuttika Kaewpin of Thailand is making a comeback as Creamline’s reinforcement along with Venezuelan Aleoscar Blanco. The other notable reinforcements coming to town are BanKo Perlas’ Lakia Bright and Yasemin Sahin Yildirim of Turkey; Danijela Dzakovic of Montenegro and Slovakian Alexandra Vajdova for BaliPure; Gyselle Silva of Cuba and Edina Selimovic of Bosnia and Herzegovina for Motolite, Wilma Salas of Cuba and American Janisa Johnson for PetroGazz; and lastly, the pair of Olena Lymareva-Flink and Jenelle Jordan for PacificTown-Army.
