Only one team stands in Gilas Pilipinas' way of reigning supreme in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

The Philippines tangles with Thailand as it vies for the gold medal in men's basketball in a winner-take-all finale at the Mall of Asia Arena on Tuesday, December 10.

Having won 12 straight gold medals and 17 overall, Gilas Pilipinas is the heavy favorite to win it all, especially now that it destroyed its first 4 opponents by an eye-popping average winning margin of 47.3 points.

But just like their battles against Singapore, Vietnam, Myanmar, and Indonesia, coach Tim Cone and Gilas Pilipinas are keeping their guard up.

"It's going be a struggle for us. I feel it. But I think we're that close to the prize now," Cone said.

Only 4 of the 12-man Philippine lineup have won a SEA Games gold medal before, namely, Troy Rosario, Greg Slaughter, Christian Standhardinger, and Kiefer Ravena, who seeks a fifth straight top podium finish.

If Gilas Pilipinas triumphs, it will be the first time for June Mar Fajardo, LA Tenorio, Japeth Aguilar, Matthew Wright, Chris Ross, Stanley Pringle, Vic Manuel, and Marcio Lassiter to nail a SEA Games gold.

Game time is at 8:15 pm.

Vic Manuel continued his stellar showing with 12 points, while Chris Ross chipped in 11. Ross and LA Tenorio combined for 12 dimes.

Gilas led from start to finish, opening with a 7-0 cushion and steadily pulling away from the 2017 silver medalists.

The team relentlessly attacked the paint for 60 points and took advantage of Indonesia's mistakes for 24 points off turnovers.

The Philippines will face Thailand on Tuesday for the gold.

The gold match between Philippines and Indonesia tips off at 6PM.

Philippine men’s volleyball team rewrote history at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Already assured of their best finish since 2005, the national team took it one big step further by completing a miraculous five-set comeback to dethrone four-time defending champion Thailand in the semifinal match.

The game looked all but over in the 4th set after the Thais reached match point, 24-21, which prompted some fans to head for the exits.

However, the star duo of Bryan Bagunas and Marck Espejo boosted by timely substitute Rex Intal had other plans for the night and somehow extended the match to a final 5th frame.

There, the Filipinos dug deep one more time and secured their first gold medal match in 42 years after rallying from 13-14 match point to the 17-15 finish.

After their last loss against Indonesia, Philippine head coach Dante Alinsunurin expressed his desire for a rematch if ever the two teams reached the finals.

Indeed, that vision came true as more history is up to be written in the championship showdown at 6 pm on Tuesday, December 10 at the PhilSport Arena in Pasig City,

Will the Filipinos finally turn the corner away from dark times or will the Indonesians hand them one last heartbreak?

The Indonesian women’s volleyball team stamped its class on winless Philippines, 22-25, 28-26, 25-22, 25-14, for its first win in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games at the PhilSports Arena on Saturday, December 7.

The game ultimately served as a preview before both teams square off again for the bronze medal on Monday, December 9.

“Siyempre nasayangan kami kasi 1st set nakuha na namin,” said Philippine team captain Aby Maraño. “Second and 3rd parating lead kami, pero ang pinaglalabanan kasi rito yung endgame, pano namin masusu-sustain from the start till the end.”

“Yun yung mga lapses na napansin namin. ‘Yun yung common na problem na kailangan naming masolusyunan.”

(Of course, we feel like we wasted a chance because we got the 1st set. We always led in the 2nd and 3rd, but what matters here is the endgame, and how we sustain our game from start to end. That’s a lapse that we noticed. That’s a common problem we need to solve.)

Mylene Paat caught fire with 14 points off 3 blocks. Ces Molina backstopped the effort with 13 markers while Majoy Baron added 12.

Alyssa Valdez was used sparingly due to stomach problems and had 2 points in the sorry loss.

After an impressive start, the Filipina spikers looked well on their way to a commanding two-set lead after a 20-15 advantage in the 2nd, but the Indonesians managed to gain set point, 25-24, after a massive 11-4 run.

Through a heated sequence that involved a successful challenge, an Indonesian service error and a Ces Molina hit, the Philippines actually managed to eke out a 26-25 set point in response. However, the reigning SEA Games silver medalists still stole the set with a 3-0 blitz.

It was practically the same story in the 3rd frame as the Filipinas ran out to a 20-17 lead thanks to the stellar play of SEA Games first-timer Eya Laure. However, the team again gave up a 6-1 run as the Indonesians ran away with their second straight set.

The 4th frame was then practically a no-contest as Indonesia burst out to a 20-9 lead and never looked back. – Rappler.com

Indonesia rallies past PH in women’s volleyball bronze preview match

Gilas Pilipinas has sent its message loud and clear – it will show no mercy on anyone that gets in its way of clinching an 18th gold medal in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games.

Another blowout victory is expected from the Philippines in its Group A clash against Vietnam on Friday, December 6, at the Mall of Asia Arena after kicking off its campaign with a 52-point romp of Singapore.

Parading an all-PBA lineup for the first time in SEA Games history, the Philippines crushed Singapore, scoring a 110-58 win on Wednesday, December 4.

Like how it shredded Singapore to pieces, Gilas Pilipinas will not hold back against Vietnam.

"We expect a much tougher battle against Vietnam. We think they're one of the teams to beat out here, so we got to be ready for them," coach Tim Cone said.

Game time is at 8:15 pm.

The Philippine women’s volleyball team’s uphill climb in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games just got a lot tougher.

After 5 grueling sets against the Tran Thi Thanh Thuy “T4”-led Vietnam national team, the Filipina volleybelles eventually faltered and gave up a 21-25, 25-23, 25-19, 20-25, 15-8 decision in their debut.

This was a must-win game that slipped from the Philippines’ grasp, as they now put up their podium hopes against the mighty Thailand dynasty on Thursday, December 5.

Game time is 6 pm at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City. (SCHEDULE: SEA Games 2019 volleyball competitions)

Currently holding a 22-year, 11-SEA Game gold medal streak, the Thais are as untouchable as they come in the biennial meet, and the Filipina spikers know it all too well.

However, both top stars Alyssa Valdez and team captain Aby Maraño are staying positive that their teammates can take it set by set against Southeast Asia’s undisputed best in women’s volleyball.

Will that set-by-set mentality result in a massive upset for the Philippines or will the Thais stay true to their reputation and cruise to another dominant win?

Gilas Pilipinas seeks to kick off its golden quest in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games on a high note with a win over Singapore when they tangle at the Mall of Asia Arena on Wednesday, December 4.

The last time the two teams faced, Singapore gave the Philippines a run for its money before succumbing to a 60-68 loss in the semifinals in the 2017 edition in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

But things are tipped differently this time, with Gilas Pilipinas parading an all-pro lineup, a move to avoid a major upset on its home turf.

"Obviously we want to get off on the right foot on our first game. We've done our homework on Singapore," said head coach Tim Cone.

Game time is at 8:15 pm.

The Philippine women’s volleyball team starts its uphill climb in the 2019 Southeast Asian Games as it takes on Vietnam on Tuesday, December 3, at the refurbished PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

Led by the veteran leadership of usual stalwarts Alyssa Valdez and Aby Maraño, the national team is set for a difficult debut against the Vietnamese led by 22-year-old sensation “T4” Tran Thi Thanh Thuy.

However, the Filipina side is also brimming with star upstarts like first-timer Eya Laure and UAAP champion Maddie Madayag, while Majoy Baron and Mylene Paat are also set to debut in the regional tournament.

With the national team riding a 14-year medal drought in the biennial meet, expectations are steadily growing for them to arrest the skid during the country’s hosting.

Will the Philippines start off its podium bid on a high note or will the visiting Vietnamese get a leg up on the road?
