Several local government units on Monday announced class suspensions for October 30 and 31; Tuesday and Wednesday due to the anticipated effects of Typhoon Rosita (International name: Yutu).

Rosita is expected to make a landfall in the area of Isabela to Aurora provinces on Tuesday.

PAGASA earlier warned residents of Northern Luzon of possible flooding and landslides.

Typhoon Rosita (Yutu) made landfall in Dinapigue, Isabela, at 4 am on Tuesday, October 30.

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) announced the landfall in a Facebook post.

The typhoon continues to have maximum winds of 150 km/h and gustiness of up to 185 km/h. It has a diameter of 600 kilometers.

Below are the areas under tropical cyclone warning signals.

Typhoon Rosita makes landfall in Isabela

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical, and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) warned of possible landslides and flash floods, as typhoon “Rosita” (international name “Yutu”) intensified and continues to threaten Northern and Central Luzon.

PAGASA weather specialist Meno Mendoza said Rosita has entered the Philippine area of responsibility (PAR) was about 875 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, as of noon yesterday.

Mendoza said it remains to be a strong cyclone with maximum sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour (kph) and gustiness of up to 240 kph.

Rosita packs about the same strength as typhoon “Ompong” (Mangkhut), which reached 205 kph and gustiness of 255 kph when it hit Cagayan province last month.

It also moves continues to move west at 20 kph, threatening the same areas slammed by Ompong, leaving dozens dead, particularly in the Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) which was hit by landslides.

Mendoza advised the public, particularly those in Northern and Central Luzon, to be alert against possible landslides or flash floods triggered by typhoon Rosita.

It is still seen to make landfall over Cagayan or Isabela by tomorrow morning.

The massive typhoon with 800-kilometer diameter could affect most of Northern and Central Luzon, including Metro Manila beginning Monday evening, Mendoza said.

“Flooding and landslides are possible, while travel by land and sea is risky,” PAGASA said.

Typhoon ‘Rosita’ intensifies, threatens Luzon


Typhoon Rosita (international name "Yutu") has intensified as it entered the country Saturday morning, weather officials said.

In its 11:00 a.m. report, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said the typhoon now has maximum sustained winds of 200 kilometers per hour (kph), up from 185 kph, near the center, and gustiness of up to 245 kph from 225 kph.

It is currently at 1,345 kilometers east of Aparri, Cagayan, moving west at 20 kph.

PAGASA said tropical cyclone warning signals are likely to be raised over parts of northern and central Luzon by evening of Sunday, Oct. 28.

Metro Manila, it added, will possibly be under Signal No. 1 by Monday evening, Oct. 29.

Rosita, the 18th typhoon to enter the country this year, is expected to make landfall over Cagayan and Isabela area on Tuesday, Oct. 30.

It will bring moderate to heavy rains to northern and central Luzon starting Monday, Oct. 29. The eastern section of northern and central Luzon, meanwhile, will experience strong to very strong winds starting Tuesday, Oct. 30.

Heavy rains are expected over the provinces of Quezon and Cagayan from Monday to Tuesday (Oct. 29 to 30).

From Tuesday to Wednesday (Oct. 30 to 31), Rosita will cause heavy rains in northern and central Luzon and Metro Manila, PAGASA said.

While it has a "slim possibility" to further intensify, the PAGASA still warned of possible destructive effects that the typhoon may cause.

"'Wag ninyong ipagwalang bahala ang bagyong ito dahil meron itong bugso ng hangin na umaabot sa 200 kph," it said, adding that the typhoon can cause flooding in low lying areas and landslides in mountainous areas.

Translation: Do not neglect this typhoon because it has gusts of up to 200 kph.

Typhoon #RositaPH intensifies upon entry to Philippines – PAGASA

Typhoon Yutu weakened on Thursday evening as it continues to approach the Philippine area of responsibility.

PAGASA weather forecaster Gener Quitlong said the typhoon was last spotted 2,230 kilometers east of Central Luzon (outside PAR) as of 8 p.m.

It is now packing maximum sustained winds of 185 km per hour from 210 kph at 4 p.m, and gusts of up to 225 kph from 260 kph.

The typhoon, which will be named Rosita, is forecast to enter PAR by Saturday morning if it continues to move west at 15 kph.

According to ABS-CBN resident meteorologist Nilo Millanes, Yutu is considered as a "violent typhoon" by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

A violent typhoon is the highest category on the agency’s scale, with its strength of 215 kph near the center and gustiness of 305 kph

The Joint Typhoon Warning Center (JTWC), meanwhile, categorized Yutu as a supertyphoon, with a strength of 270 kph and gusts reaching up to 325 kph.

Yutu slammed into US Western Pacific territories on Wednesday. It was the second major typhoon to hit the islands after Mangkhut struck in September, bringing strong winds and rains that caused damage in Hong Kong and Macau and triggered landslides that killed dozens in the Philippines.

Millanes said the probability of the typhoon to make landfall in Northern Cagayan, Philippines is low as of posting time due to the wide spread in the forecast tracks after the 72-hour forecast time.
