Game Saturday (Mall of Asia Arena)
3:30 p.m. – Ateneo vs UST

Ateneo breathed life in its UAAP women’s volleyball title bid on Wednesday after besting University of Santo Tomas, 26-24, 14-25, 25-21, 25-15, in Game 2 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

The Lady Eagles rose from a second-set stumble and dominated the next two frames in all fronts to extend the best-of-three series into a deciding match on Saturday at the same venue.

Maddie Madayag sizzled with 17 points built on 10 kills, four blocks and three aces as Ateneo recovered from a 25-17, 25-16, 25-20 Game 1 loss last week.

Bea De Leon chipped in 13 points including 10 from attacks while Kat Tolentino added 11 points.

Libero Dani Ravena also stepped up in the crunch with 22 digs and 12 receptions as the Lady Eagles found a way to stop the Tigresses’ hard-hitting kills.

De Leon said the team learned to adjust quickly from that Game 1 defeat by starting out strong and keeping their firepower when the opportunity strikes.

“It’s a good thing that we’ve been here before, in this situation. You learn to adjust quickly and learn from your mistakes,” said De Leon, who is in her last playing year.

Ateneo had that opportunity to regroup at the start of the third frame after catching UST off guard following the temporary exit of Rookie of the Year Eya Laure from spraining her left ankle.

Laure returned late in the set, but the Lady Eagles have already found their fiery touch, taking it to the fourth with a quick 12-5 lead for good.

Laure finished with 10 points while Season Most Valuable Player Sisi Rondina, who played before her family at the audience, scored 22 points in futile efforts.

Overall, Ateneo outplayed UST in attacks (41-37), blocks (8-6) and service aces (11-10).

Ateneo bounces back, forces Game 3

University of Sto. Tomas veteran ace Sisi Rondina added another feather on her cap after copping the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament Most Valuable Player award.

The fifth year open spiker had a sensational final season, averaging 17.7 points per game with a 33.38 spiking percentage and 3.98 digs per set, but more importantly, the Cebu native piloted the Tigresses to their first Finals appearance in eight years.

Rondina, who won four beach volleyball titles and four MVP honors, also claimed the Second Best Open spiker and Best Scorer awards. The Queen Tigress became the second player to win both the indoor and beach volleyball MVP awards in a single season since Wendy Semana of Far Eastern University recorded the feat in Season 70.

UST prized recruit Eya Laure bagged the Rookie of the Year award – the Tigresses second straight citation after Milena Alessandrini won the recognition last year and third in five years after Laure’s sister, EJ, won it in Season 77.

It is the first time that the MVP and RoY awards were won by players from the same school since Aby Marano (MVP) and Ara Galang of De La Salle University did the feat in Season 74.

Laure averaged 16.4 points per outing and a 35.90% accuracy in attacks. She also won the First Best Open Spiker.

Kat Tolentino of Ateneo de Manila University got the Best Opposite Spiker award averaging 14.2 point per game with 30.23% attack accuracy and 0.63 kill blocks per set.

National University’s Roselyn Doria was named First Best Blocker while outgoing Lady Eagle Maddie Madayag got the Second Best Blocker honors.

University of the East’s Kath Arado was named Best Libero while teammate Lai Bendong bagge the Best Setter award. NU rookie Princess Robles, who averaged 0.48 ace per set, earned the Best Server award.

Ateneo – which missed last year's finale – leaned on usual reliables Kat Tolentino, Bea de Leon and Maddie Madayag to fend off an FEU side that kept clawing back in the do-or-die Final Four on Wednesday, May 8, at the Filoil Flying V Centre.

The victory propelled Ateneo to a best-of-three Finals series against University of Santo Tomas, the No. 2 seed which dethroned La Salle last Sunday to clinch the first title slot.

Game 1 of the best-of-three title series is set on Saturday, May 11, at the Araneta Coliseum.

Kat Tolentino led Ateneo with 19 points off 17 attacks while Maddie Madayag and Ponggay Gaston added 12 markers apiece.

"It's about believing in the team and believing in each other," said Tolentino.

Jer Malabanan and Heather Guino-o closed out their UAAP careers with 18 and 12 points, respectively.

FEU had forced a winner-take-all after stunning Ateneo in a five-set thriller in the Final Four opener last Saturday.

After 3 tightly-contested sets that saw Ateneo take a 2-1 lead, the FEU defense fell apart at the start of the 4th as Tolentino led a 9-1 Ateneo run.

Ponggay Gaston kept FEU’s comeback attempts at bay after two straight points off a spike and a block, 13-4.

But graduating hitter Jer Malabanan gave the Lady Tamaraws a glimmer of hope after inching within 5, 10-15, off a booming kill for the 6-2 run.

However, Tolentino all but shattered their hopes after a brutal smash for the 10-point lead, 21-11.

The contest was much more competitive in the earlier sets as both squads traded scoring runs. FEU came close to snatching away the crucial 3rd set but Gaston stopped their comeback at 25-23.

Ateneo outlasts FEU, books UAAP title showdown vs UST

Far Eastern University lived to fight another day as it eke out a hard-fought 10-25, 25-23, 25-22, 12-25, 15-8, victory over Ateneo de Manila University to force a knockout semifinals match in the UAAP Season 81, Saturday at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City.

Fresh from a refreshing win over DLSU, the Lady Tamaraws displayed resiliency to erase the Lady Eagles’ twice-to-beat advantage and forged Game 2 on Wednesday for a chance to return to the Finals.

After dismal performance in sets 1 and 4, the Morayta-based spikers showed more grit and grind in the decider to finally solve the puzzle of Ateneo, who swept them in the eliminations.

Heather Guino-o led the charge with 17 points off seven kills, five aces and four blocks.

Ateneo preyed on FEU’s faulty reception for a sizzling opening set win, dropping five aces and restraining the latter to a meager one attack point.

With their net defense and passes stabilized, the Lady Tamaraws were able to activate their offense as the Lady Eagles were plagued by errors. The ladies in green-and-gold kept the fight close until the 23-point mark before a Czarina Carandang quick and a Ponggay Gaston error sealed the set for them.

It was a back-and-forth affair after the Lady Eagles squandered a 10-5 advantage while their opponents’ service game came into play. Down by five, Ateneo attempted for a comeback off Kat Tolentino’s heroics before Deanna Wong’s service error handed the set to FEU.

The blue-and-white hitters regained their dominant form in the fourth as they gunned for a 23-11 lead and never looked back.

Unlike their first round encounter, FEU proved to be the better team, going for a 7-1 run to chalk a match point before an error from the Ateneo side sealed the extension.

Tolentino talllied 21 points while Bea de Leon had 16 on a losing effort for the Lady Eagles.

FEU forces knockout semis after five-set stunner over Ateneo

The UST Golden Tigresses came out dominant from the get-go to stun the La Salle Lady Spikers in 4 sets, 25-14, 25-13, 23-25, 25-19, and claim the No. 2 spot and the twice-to-beat semifinal advantage in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball wars at the jampacked FilOil Flying V Centre on Wednesday, May 1.

On Labor Day, the Tigresses outworked the Lady Spikers behind the solid plays of skipper Sisi Rondina and rookie sensation Eya Laure.

For the first time in a decade, the Lady Spikers dynasty heads into the Final Four without an advantage while the Tigresses clinched their best finish since Season 73.

Rondina led UST anew with a staggering 29 points off 25 attacks, 2 blocks and 2 aces.

Defending champion La Salle and UST disputed the last semifinal bonus after finishing tied at 10-4 at the end of the elimination round.

Both squads will clash again in the Final Four on Sunday with the Tigresses needing only one win to advance to the championship round.

No. 1 Ateneo, toting the other twice-to-beat edge, battles Far Eastern University in the other semifinal pairing on Saturday.

UST set the tone in the opening set with a dominant 25-14 performance on the back of Rondina’s patented kills.

The Lady Spikers found no answers to the Tigresses’ unrelenting offense in the 2nd set either as UST cruised to a 10-0 run, 15-7. La Salle tried to claw back into the frame as UST sat at set point, but Laure eventually sealed the deal, 25-23.

With La Salle down 0-2 against the UST underdogs, captain Des Cheng rallied her troops to a 6-1 lead off an ace and a Jolina Dela Cruz block. However, UST roared back with a 7-1 run heading to the first technical timeout.

Both teams traded points before La Salle survived the 3rd set, 25-23, off a UST hard hit.

The Tigresses wriggled free anew from the comebacking Lady Spikers with a 5-1 run in the 4th set, 15-12. The tireless Sisi Rondina then pummeled two more hits as UST sailed to a 19-13 gap.

Rondina turned unconscious in the end game as Laure sent La Salle packing, 25-19.

UST stuns La Salle, seizes twice-to-beat semis bonus

Far Eastern University ended its elimination round campaign with a bang after stunning three-time defending champion De La Salle University in a come-from-behind, 25-22, 13-25, 15-25, 27-25, 15-8, win on Sunday in the UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball tournament at the FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The Lady Tamaraws finished the elims with a 9-5 win-loss record and ended an eight-game losing skid against the Lady Spikers since the Season 78 semifinals clincher.

FEU’s victory sent DLSU reeling to its fourth loss in 14 games, forcing the Lady Spikers to a playoff for the last Final Four twice-to-beat advantage against University of Sto. Tomas (10-4) on Wednesday at the same venue at 3:30 p.m.

Heather Guino-o showed the way for the Lady Tams with 24 points including 20 from spikes and played clutch in the fifth set.

Guino-o pushed FEU to an 8-4 lead in the deciding frame as the Lady Tamaraws sustained their momentum after surviving an extended fourth set. FEU pulled away with a 6-3 blast capped by a Guino-o off speed.

Aduke Ogunsanya saved a match point on a running attack before DLSU rookie Jolina Dela Cruz sent her attack wide as the Lady Spikers surrendered the match.

University of Santo Tomas Golden Tigresses got a huge morale boost heading into the Final Four after outlasting National University Lady Bulldogs, 27-25, 25-17, 21-25, 25-16, in UAAP Season 81 women’s volleyball on Saturday at San Juan Arena.

Cherry Rondina once again spearheaded the attack with 21 points, all were attack points, for the Golden Tigresses, which capped off the double round eliminations with 10-4 win-loss slate.

UST actually can still vie for a “twice-to-beat” advantage in the semifinals round if the defending champions De La Salle University Lady Spikers (10-3) drops its final elimination round match against Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws today.

The Golden Tigresses got to a flat start in the opening set and has to rally from an early advantage by the Lady Bulldogs before turning to the clutch conversions of Rondina and rookie Kecelyn Galdones.

UST, however, made a quick work of NU in the second set as they build a 17-9 lead en route to a 2-0 set edge. Golden Tigresses could not get the job done in the third period with Lady Bulldogs surging to a 17-12 lead to extend the match to another set.

Golden Tigresses showed its fangs in the fourth frame with Rondina, Galdonez and Ejiya Laure conniving for 23-15 advantage and ending the hopes of Lady Bulldogs for a graceful exit.

UST drubs NU in UAAP women’s volleyball

THE Ateneo Lady Eagles secured a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four of Season 81 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines after shutting out the Adamson Lady Falcons, 25-16, 28-26 and 25-17, in their league match on Wednesday at the FilOil Flying V Arena in San Juan City.

Derailed in its attempt to secure the semifinal incentive last time around, Ateneo (11-2) made sure it would pull through against Adamson (1-12) with a dominant performance right from the opening buzzer.

Earlier in the day, the defending champions De La Salle Lady Spikers notched their 10th win and fortified their top-two push with a straight-sets win over the University of the East Lady Warriors, 25-17, 25-16 and 25-19.

Led by their veterans, the Lady Eagles were thorough at the start of their “avian war” with the Lady Falcons.

They soared to a 16-11 lead midway into the opening frame as Kat Tolentino and Maddie Madayag made their presence felt, before closing out the set with a 9-5 run to go up, 1-0.

Adamson came out the second on firmer footing.

Despite going down 0-5 early, the Lady Falcons charged back, led by Krich Macaslang, to claim an 8-6 lead by the first technical break.

Ateneo, however, did not stay down for long, answering with a 10-6 blast to go on top, 16-14, heading into homestretch of the frame.

The Lady Falcons turned to their bench for some support and were repaid instantly as they overtook their opponents, 21-19, with players like Lee-Ann Perez leading the charge.

It was, however, temporary as the Lady Eagles flapped their wings harder to squeak past and go up, 2-0.

Ateneo continued to be steady to begin the third set, racing to an 8-6 lead early on.

Adamson kept pressuring Ateneo after but the Lady Eagles continued to hold sway, 16-13, by the second technical timeout.

The Lady Eagles stretched their lead to five, 20-15, after and from there were never really threatened as they moved for the win.

Tolentino paced a balanced attack by Ateneo with 17 points.

Madayag had 13 while Ponggay Gaston finished with nine points.

For Adamson it was Bern Flora and Chiara Permentilla who led with nine points each.

“I commend the players for playing the way they did. They have been sacrificing a lot,” said Ateneo coach Oliver Almadro following their win.

“We are thankful to have gotten the twice-to-beat and have a chance to go to the finals. But it is only a chance and we still have to work for it,” he added.

LADY SPIKERS
Meanwhile, in the first game, La Salle made short work of UE by winning in just three sets.

Stayed on top of things throughout the match, the Lady Spikers (10-3) with the victory further strengthened their claim to one of the two top spots and the twice-to-beat advantage that go with it in the Final Four.

The contest had a familiar route in the first two sets with the Lady Warriors starting strong only to falter amid a tough stand from the Lady Spikers as the sets progressed and bow down.

Judith Abil led UE to a good start in the third frame as they took an 8-6 lead by the first technical timeout.

Collectively though La Salle rallied back, overtaking the Lady Warriors, 16-14, midway.

The Lady Spikers then moved to a 20-17 lead after.

UE tried to make a last-ditch effort to come back, coming to within three points, 22-19.

But Des Cheng and the rest of the Lady Spikers would have none of that as they racked up three straight points after to close out the match.

Rookie Jolina Dela Cruz and Aduke Ogunsanya led La Salle with 10 points each with Tin Tiamzon adding nine.

Cheng and Des Clemente had eight points apiece for La Salle.

UE (3-10), for its part, was paced by Abil with 16 points.

“This was an important match for us and we could not afford to relax. UE had nothing to lose. I told the players to continue playing hard,” said La Salle coach Ramil De Jesus after their win.

“We still have to work on our game. We are now on the last part and we have to be ready heading into the next round,” he added.

La Salle rounds out its elimination-round schedule versus the Far Eastern University Lady Tamaraws on April 28 while UE plays Ateneo on the same date.
